Meet STARLHINZ: From the Streets of Lagos to the Global Stage On Fashion, Music & the Power of Self-Expression

Starlhinz is a Nigerian Afro-fusion/AfroSexy artist, model and creative building a distinctive identity through music, fashion and visual expression. From humble beginnings in Lagos, she has transformed limited resources into creativity, confidence and ambition. In this exclusive Q&A, Starlhinz discusses her journey, personal style, music, challenges, achievements and dreams of taking her unique African creative brand to the world.

1. Who are you?

I’m Starlhinz, a Nigerian Afro-fusion/AfroSexy artist, model and creative. I’m all about expressing myself through music, fashion and my personality. My sound and brand are centered around confidence, femininity, sensuality and good energy. I’m currently building my own lane and growing through my music and creative projects.

2. How did your journey into fashion and modelling begin?

My journey into fashion and modelling started from the ghetto, where I didn’t have access to many resources, but I always found a way to express myself through fashion. I started by putting different pieces together and creating my own style with what I had. Growing up in that environment taught me to be creative and confident with my looks.

I’ve always maintained that unique ghetto fashion identity because I don’t want to lose the authenticity of where I’m coming from. I mix street style, femininity and my personality to create looks that feel different. For me, fashion isn’t just about expensive clothes—it’s about how you wear them, how you carry yourself and the story behind the look.

3. What inspired you to venture into music and become an artist/singer?

Music has always been another way for me to express myself. Coming from the ghetto, I’ve experienced different sides of life, and I wanted to turn those experiences, emotions and energy into something people could connect with.

I eventually realized I didn’t just want to listen to music—I wanted to create my own. That pushed me to become an artist. I’m building my own sound and identity as Starlhinz, blending Afrobeat, Afrofusion and my AfroSexy vibe. Music is more than entertainment to me; it is a way to tell my story, express my femininity and show people where I’m coming from.

4. How do you balance your careers in modelling and music?

I see music and modelling as two sides of the same creative journey. Music allows me to express myself through sound, while modelling allows me to express myself through fashion and visuals. They complement each other, especially because my image and fashion are a major part of my identity as an artist.

It can be challenging because both require time, consistency and hard work, but I try to stay organized and give each opportunity the attention it deserves. I’m still growing in both spaces, so I’m learning every day how to manage my time while staying true to my vision.

5. How would you describe your personal fashion style?

I’d describe my personal fashion style as unique, bold, feminine and unapologetically ghetto-inspired. I love mixing streetwear with sexy and classy pieces while maintaining that raw Lagos/ghetto energy that represents where I’m from.

I don’t like following trends exactly as they are. I prefer adding my own touch and making a look feel like Starlhinz. For me, fashion is about confidence, creativity and how you carry yourself—not necessarily how expensive the outfit is.

6. How do you use your work to showcase Nigerian and African culture?

I use my work to show that Nigerian and African culture can be expressed in a modern, bold and creative way. Through my music, fashion and visuals, I bring in elements of Nigerian street culture, our language, our energy and the way we express ourselves.

I also embrace the ghetto side of Lagos because that’s part of my story. I want people to see that you can come from a rough or humble background and still create something beautiful, stylish and internationally appealing. My goal is to represent where I’m from while giving it my own Starlhinz/AfroSexy identity.

7. Tell us about your music and the kind of sound you create.

My music is a reflection of my personality, experiences and the energy I want people to feel. I’d describe my sound as AfroSexy/Afrofusion, blending Afrobeat with sensual, confident and catchy elements.

My songs “Sexy Energy” and “Friday Night” are good examples of the sound I create. They explore confidence, femininity, attraction, lifestyle and having a good time while maintaining a Nigerian/African feel.

I’m focused on creating music that feels authentic to me rather than trying to sound like everyone else. I want people to hear a song and immediately recognize that Starlhinz energy.

8. What has been your biggest challenge in the fashion or music industry?

One of my biggest challenges has been navigating the industry as an independent upcoming artist and model, especially over the last seven months. There have been moments when getting my songs done has been difficult because some producers charge more than I can afford, while others are hesitant to work with upcoming artists.

In modelling, I’ve also experienced uncomfortable situations and harassment from a few people and agencies. That made me realize how important it is to set boundaries and be careful about who I work with. I’ve also encountered brand deals that weren’t fair or didn’t properly value the work and exposure I bring.

Despite these experiences, I haven’t allowed them to stop me. They’ve made me stronger, more selective and more determined to build my career on my own terms. I’m learning to recognize my value, protect myself, negotiate better and keep moving forward.

9. What are some of your biggest achievements so far?

My biggest achievement so far is how far I’ve come within such a short period. Coming from the ghetto and starting with limited resources, I’ve been able to build my identity as both an artist and model.

In music, releasing “Sexy Energy” and “Friday Night” and seeing people connect with my sound has been a major milestone. I’ve also grown my online presence and built a community of people who genuinely support my journey.

In modelling and fashion, working on different shoots, creating fashion content and receiving opportunities that have put me in rooms I once only dreamed of entering are also huge achievements.

But honestly, one of my biggest achievements is not giving up. There have been many moments when things could have made me quit, but I’m still here, still creating and still pushing. For me, this is only the beginning.

10. What are your dreams for the future as a model, musician and creative?

My biggest dream is to build a name that goes beyond Nigeria and become an internationally recognized artist, model and creative. I want to take my music to a global audience, grow my sound and eventually perform on major stages while collaborating with established artists.

As a model, I dream of working with major fashion and beauty brands, walking in international fashion shows and appearing in campaigns and magazines. I want to show that someone can come from the ghetto, build a unique identity and still reach the biggest stages.

As a creative, I want to build a brand that represents Starlhinz—bringing my music, fashion, visuals and personality together. Ultimately, I want my story to inspire other young creatives from humble backgrounds to believe that where they come from does not have to determine where they end up.
